STEAM Education

In a Nutshell: Children learn to think like Social Scientists and apply curricular learning without any boundaries, to solve and understand global issues and problems af-fecting life on Earth. To make a paradigm shift in our teaching methodologies we need to develop the key skills of critical thinking, collaboration, communication and creativity and make our children employable, in the 21st Century. Industry has been raising alarms on the number of unemployable youth that our universities and schools are giving into the job market. Serious introspection needs to be done, so that we are holistically looking at the aims and objectives of our education system at large. Novel situations need novel solutions. "The dynamic nature of the 21st Century requires a paradigm shift in the pedagogy being used in classrooms".

One thing that we cannot overlook in today's times, is the need for experiential and real world learning. It is important that children have an active engagement with the world around them right from their foundation years. Therefore, we need to change our approach on how topics are being disseminated in the classrooms.

STEAM stands for Science Technology Engineering Arts and Mathematics. Learning is more interesting when knowledge and skill are used in an integrated manner, rather than in isolated fragments, and that's why STEAM education is so relevant in today's world. Tasks usually invoke both the right and the left brain, involving a deeper understanding of self through perceptions and perspectives, thereby bringing in an essential component of mindfulness in learning. More and more active methodologies like STEAM need to be adopted in schools on a large scale, so that the emphasis shifts from rote learning and scores on standardised exams, to strategy building, innovative thinking and problem solving.

In the process of achieving well laid out Learning Outcomes, we cannot overlook the fact that a holistic and experiential approach should be the focus of any transactional methodology applied so that multiple levels of critical thinking get developed. This however may be a huge challenge for many developing countries like India and its neighbouring countries that are still struggling with their basic literacy levels. Time demands that we start making a systemic shift towards dynamic and active methodologies to raise more employable and well-grounded youth. We need a wholesome education system on our platter. The transition of STEM to STEAM brings about a promise of a radical shift in the learning outcomes, making the transactional methodology more holistic, mindful, experiential and interdisciplinary.

The 21st Century is appearing to be very evolving and dynamic, require a set of skills, which cannot be achieved with the traditional methodologies that were used to meet the educational demands of the post Industrial Revolution era. Today when Artificial Intelligence, Machine learning and Augmented reality pose a threat to engulf traditional jobs, there is a need to develop problem solving skills as well as domain expertise in every aspect of life. As a methodology, STEAM instead of STEM promises to give all this and even more. STEAM as a methodology drives interdisciplinary learning as it promises cross curriculum integration in a seamless manner within the structured curriculum. STEAM is also making it easier to introduce innovation and innovative thinking in classrooms. An innovation curriculum could be an answer to many educational woes. Design thinking and mindfulness is another aspect that finds seamless integration in the curriculum through STEAM.
